Welcome to Sustainable Stanford’s platform for visualizing campus sustainability performance. This tool tracks progress towards the university’s commitments and increases data accessibility for the purpose of using the campus as a living laboratory for developing sustainability innovations.

Emissions

Stanford University is committed to net zero emissions by 2050 and has already reduced scope 1 and 2 emissions by 80% from peak levels.

Energy

The conversion to heat recovery and efficiency increases in Stanford’s energy system catalyzed significant savings and natural gas reduction.

Renewables

The university achieved its 100% renewable electricity goal in 2022 and continues to support California’s solar energy market.

Waste

The Stanford community has a goal to divert 90% or more of waste from landfill through reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting.

Water

Domestic water use has decreased approximately 48%, even with nearly 3 million square feet of campus facilities added.

Transportation

Thanks to sustainable commute programs, the drive-alone rate decreased from 67% to an all-time low of 36% over the past 20 years.
